Tolstoy’s short story 'God Sees the Truth, but Waits' first published in 1872 is about

the false conviction and imprisonment of a man for a murder he did not commit, and it takes the form of a parable for forgiveness. This short story "God Sees the Truth, But Waits" is a heart-touching tragic story which has been written by a Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. This story is about a young merchant named Ivan Dimitrich Aksionov who lived in Vladimir, a town of Russia. This story has presented the imprisonment of this main character for murder which he hadn't committed.

In the story,  Aksionov was quite a handsome , fair-haired, curly-heased fellow, full of fun, and very fond of singing. He had two shops and a horse.  Before marriage, he used to drink much and even become riotous. After marriage, he gave up much drinking expect now and then. He had a wife with small kids. Once, during summer, Aksionov planned to go to Nizhny fair to sell his goods. Before setting off, his wife told him about bad dream. She dreamt that her husband had returned with gray hair from the town. Aksionov laughed to her remark and told that that was the sign of luck. When he had travelled half –way, he met a merchant whom he knew. They planned to live in a same inn for the night. They had tea together and went to bed in adjoining room. As his habit get up early morning and started his journey.

When he had gone about twenty-five miles, he stopped for the horses to feed. He took rest there and began to play his guitar. At the meantime, two soldiers and a district officer came to him and questioned him about a merchant Ryazan whom he had slept at night at same building. The officer asked, where did he sleep at night, were  there any people in an inn? Why did he leave earlier? Did he see the merchant that morning?  Aksionov surprised with these questions. He described all that was happened last night. Aksionov asked the officer why he asked these questions as if he had robbed the merchant. The officer said that there was murderer of a merchant in an inn where Aksionov was also stayed. The dead body of merchant had been found at an inn's room with his throat cut. The officer searched in Aksionov's  luggage and found a  blood-stained knife in his luggage. Aksionov trembled with fear. 

He was charged for murdering the merchant and even robbing twenty-thousand roubles from him. Aksionov was arrested and sent in prison. He was charged for murdering the merchant and even robbing twenty-thousand roubles from him.

His wife came there to meet him along with her small kids. She got permission to meet her husband from the official after begging much. When she saw her husband among the criminals and thieves in criminal's dress, she fainted for a long time. Then she drew her children to her and sat down near him. She asked him what was happened that day. He replied that what was happened and added that he was not the convict.  She reminded him about the bad dream when he hadn't have started journey that day. She planned to go on petition the Czar not to let an innocent man perish. He didn't reply, but looked down cast.  She gently touched his hair and requested him to tell the truth. She again asked who the murderer was.  

Aksionov wept when his own wife raised a suspicious question to him. Aksionov said good-bye to his family for the last time. For him, God was the only one to expect for mercy. He was tortured severely there. Aksionov was sent to a Siberian prison for twenty- six years to work in the mines. His hair and beard turned white and grey. He walked slowly, spoke very little and never laughed. He learnt to make boots and earned money. He bought a book named "The Lives of the Saints". He used to read the chapter in the dim light of the cell and every Sunday he used to read and sing the chapter at the church. 

His fellow prisoners respected him and called him Grandfather or the Saint. Prisoners would go to him for justice if there were fights in the prison. He spent his every single day in God's devotion and on the way of truth.

 One day, a gang of new prisoners came to the prison. Among those prisoners, one was

Makar Semyonich. He was a tall, strong man of about sixty with grey hair. He related his story to others about his arrest in horse stealing case. He was also from Vladimir.  He didn't recognize Aksionov. Aksionov  asked him about a person whose name is Aksionov who lived in vlasimir. Marker told that they are rich and their father Mr. Aksionov was in Siberia as a sinner like themselves. Marker asked about grandfather, but he didn't like to tell anything about himself. Other prisoners told his case that he was accused of killing a merchant. A police officer found a blood stained knife in his luggage. Since then he was passing days in prison. Marker got exclaimed, after hearing the story. He asked grandpa how he was so old. Aksionov wonder whether this man knew who had killed the merchant, or heard who killed the merchant, or the Marker was the killer of the merchant.

Aksionov couldn't get to sleep that night after hearing Makar's words. He felt sure that Makar was the person who killed the merchant. He kept on thinking about his family, his long time sufferings and so on. After months of knowing each other, Aksionov discovered that Makar is the one who killed the merchant from Ryazan. He was quite angry with Makar but didn't speak a word about it.

 One night, Aksionov discovered Makar digging a tunnel under his sleeping shelf. Makar threatened him not to tell a word otherwise he would kill him. Aksionov didn't bother about Makar's threatful words. Next day, soldiers discovered the tunnel. The governor arrived to question the prisoners but no one spoke a word about the tunnel. When Aksionov was asked about the tunnel, he also denied saying about Semyonich. 

That night Makar quietly came to Aksionov. Makar begged for forgiveness. He confessed the truth and told that he killed the merchant and wanted to kill Aksionov too but heard a noise outside and hide the knife into his bag and escaped out of the window. Makar knelt upon the ground and again asked for forgiveness. Aksionov told that there was no worth of forgiveness because he suffered long, his life was in the end stage, his wife was died, his children will not know him.  Marker admitted confessing his crime to the governor. Makar didn't rise, bent his head on the floor and wept for his forgiveness. Aksionov even wept along with Makar. Aksionov felt his heart lighter. He longed to stay in prison. When the order for his release came Aksionov was already died in prison.

Naguib Mahfouz is an Egyptian writer. He began writing when he was seventeen. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1998. He has written more than 30 novels, more than hundred short stories, and more than two hundred article. Most of his writings were based on the culture and Nationality of Egypt. He uses elaborative, figurative and descriptive language. The story ‘Half a Day’ was published in his book 'The false Dawn'. In this storyhe describes going off to school as a young boy, spending the days in a school and leaving as an old man at the end of his life.

In the beginning part of the story, the narrator is presented as a schoolboybut later he is an old man. The narrator is getting ready for his school. He is walking along his father clutching (holding tightly) his hand. His clothes were new: the black shoes, the green school uniform and the red tarboosh (cap). He is delighted because of his new dress. He looks at his mother who is standing at the window and looking at them. They walked along a street lined with gardens; on  both side were extensive fields planted with crops, prickly pears, henna trees, and a few date palms. The boy asks, "Why school?" and promised that he won't do any bad at home to annoy his father. Father laughs and says that he is not going to punish him. School is not punishment. It is the factory that makes useful men out of boys. It makes a mature man like father and brother. They reached to the gate of a school. The boys and girls are going through the gate and father tells him to go in with them. The boy doesn't want to go to school and hold his hand tightly. His father promised that he would be at the gate when the school time is over.

He enters to the school and sees many new faces of boys and girls. He is strange to them. One boy comes and asks him who hasbrought him. The boy answers that his father has brought him. But that boy simply says that his father was died. The narrator doesn't know what to say. The gate is closed and the bell rings. The teacher makesthe line of students. There are three high building surrounding. In each floor there are balcony roofed in wood.

One woman comes and starts: here you can get you mother and father like people, here and there everything is enjoyable and beneficial and religions. She tells them to dry up their tears. First time in his life he haslearnt variety of things, he makes some boy and girl friends. He participates in different kinds of games: swings, the vaulting horse, ball games. Then goes to a music room and chants some song. He starts to learn language and numbers. He sees a globe and knows about the creator of the earth. They eat delicious food, take a little nap, and wake up to go on with friendship and love, play and learn.

In the school the boy doesn't find everything smooth and sweet as he has expected. Sometime they start to fight and quarrel with their friends while the lady sometimes smile or sometimes scold even more frequently would resort to physical punishment.  In addition, the time for changing one's mind is over and gone there is no question of every returning to the paradise of home. At long last, the chime rings to declare the end of the workday, and the schoolchildren race to the entryways to leave the school.

The storyteller bids farewell to his companions. He gets out of the gate expecting his father waiting at the gate. However his father is not waiting for him. In the wake of sticking around for quite a while, the storyteller chooses to walk home without anyone else. After he has taken a few steps, a middle-aged man passes by, and he realizes at once that he knows him. The mancomes toward him, smiling, and shaking his hand asks it is long since they have visited, how he is. The narrator says that he is fine. But the man says that he is not fine these days and goes in his way.

The narrator stands by the road and observes it very closely. He takes few steps and he search the street lined with garden but doesn't find. It has disappeared due to modernization. He doesn't find the fields, which border the road. There are tallbuildings standing beside the road. At various point stand conjurers (magician) showing off their tricks and making snakes appear from his basket. There is an announcement of the opening circus. A line of trucks carryingcentralsecuritytroops, a fire engine sirens, battle between taxi driver and his passenger. The narrator is shocked to the rapidchangeduring 'half a day' between early morning and sunset. He feels the time is very short in his life. During this short period of time there are many changes in his life. He searches his home among the crowd. He has to cross Abu Khoda to reach to his house but the moving vehicles don't give him chance to cross the road.

He is still standing on the road but can't cross the road. Subsequent to standing quite a while, the storyteller is helpedto cross the road by a little boy who works at the ironing shop on the corner of the street. When the boy holds out his hand and addresses him as Grandpa and then the storyteller understands that he has now become old. He realized that a half-day at school was his entire life, which passed quickly.

Oliver Henry was born in 1862 and died in 1910 in United States. When he was three his mother was died and he was raised up by his grandmother and his aunt. He left his school at the age of 15 and searched for job. He was accused of embezzlement (act of falsely getting property of other) and remains in jail for five years. He published 12 stories by changing his name for not letting his readers know he was in jail. His stories are very popular, which has twist in the ending. His story 'The Cactus' is also impressive story having twist in the end. The story depicts a symbolic meaning of a cactus. Main character 'Trysdale' is impressed with a greatness, tenderness, and beauty of a girl. He proposes her but she doesn't answer him. But there was a tag in a cactus having its Spanish name. When he translatesand he finds her response that she loves him.

Trysdale is young bachelor who lives in a bachelor apartments. He is standing by the table and observes a green looking  plant in a red earthen jar. On the table stood a singular-looking green plant in a red earthen jar. The plant was one of the species of cacti, which is very attractive, it has long tentacular (flexible) leaves that perpetually (constantly) swayed with the slightest breeze with a peculiar beckoning motion. Trysdale's friend, the brother of the bride, stood at a sideboard complaining at being allowed to drink alone. Both men were in evening dress. He removes gloves from his hand.

He remembered last few hours before when a beautiful lady got married with a man. The scene moved around his eyes. There was the scent of the flowers that had been bankedin odorous masses about the church. He recalled hearing the low-pitched hum of a thousand well-bred voices, the rustle of crisp garments and, most insistently recurring, the words of the minister irrevocably.

Trysdale was not willing to see all the scene where his beloved was going to get married and he was being witness of her wedding. As she had slowly moved up the aisle (a middle part of a church) toward the altar he had felt an unworthy, sullen (ill-tempered) exultation (victory) that had served to support him. He had told himself that she was not happy and looking pale because of other man than the man to whom she was about to give herself. He glades to her because she gave a glance to him. But even that poor consolation had been wrenched (violently move in a turn) from him. For, when he saw that swift, limpid, upward look that she gave the man when he took her hand, he knew himself to be forgotten. Once that same look had been raised to him, and he had understood its meaning. Indeed, his conceit had crumbled; its last prop was gone. Why had it ended thus? There had been no quarrel between them, nothing. In this way Trysdale surprises to her decision. Why did she didn't like to marry with him. What weakness did he have?

 As Trysdale grimly wrenched apart the seam of his last glove, the crowning instance of his fatuous and tardily mourned egoism came vividly back to him. He used to think himself as a superior man. He didn't find any weakness in him. The scene was the night when he had asked her to come up on his pedestal with him and share his greatness. He could not, now, for the pain of it, allow his mind to dwell upon the memory of her convincing beauty that night--the careless wave of her hair, the tenderness and virginal charm of her looks and words. He had found everything was perfect on her. During their conversation she had said, " Captain Carruthers tells me that your can speak the Spanish language like a native." Trysdale used to speak some phrases of Spanish to his friends. He can't deny that he doesn't know Spanish language in front of her. He wanted to be superior as knowing many languages in front of his girlfriend. 

            How she fluttered like a snared bird when he laid his mightiness at her feet! They were in deep love and have not decided when to get married. He could have sworn, and he could swear now, that unmistakable consent (state of in love before marriage) was in her eyes, but, coyly, she would give him no direct answer. He was waiting her responses for marriage. He was confident that she would answer next day. The next day he waited, impatient, in his rooms for the word. But, he never got any response from her. At noon her groom came to the door and left the strange cactus in the red earthen jar. There was no note, no message, merely a tag upon the plant bearing a botanical name. He waited until night, but her answer did not come. His large pride and hurt vanity kept him from seeking her. Two evenings later they met at a dinner. Their greetings were conventional, but she looked at him, breathless, wondering, eager. He was courteous, adamant, waiting her explanation. With womanly swiftness she took her cue from his manner, and turned to snow and ice.

            One friend has come to his room and tells about cactus. And there was a tag with its botanical name in Spanish language. It was written 'Ventomarme'. This word means in English, 'come and take me'. Trysdale didn't understand that she had answered him to come and take her in Spanish. He couldn't do anything she got married to another man. He got cactus in his room, which gives only prickly pain in his life.

 Education is defined as the light of life, and valuable knowledge of living. It is defined as life itself not the preparation for the life or it is also the cultivation of life. Education makes a man social, civilized, progressive, friendly and wise. It provides knowledge and skill for our live. Without the education human are like only mammal animal. Education teaches to live happily in the time of difficulty and scarcities. Anita Desai

Anita Desai, original name Anita Mazumdar, (b. 1937- ) is an Indian novelist, short story writer and the writer of children’s books. As a biracial child born to a German mother and Indian father, Desai was exposed to German, Hindi and English language from her childhood. After completing her B. A. from University of Delhi, Desai began to publish her stories and novels. She has many short stories and popular novels. She received Shahitya Academy Award for her novel Fire on the Mountain. Her novel In Custody was adapted into a film in 1993. ‘The Devoted Son’ is extracted from her collection of stories, The Complete Short Stories.

‘A Devoted Son’ is a realistic story set in a middle-class Indian family in an Indian village. The story shows how parents cherish their ambition towards their children and how a son should fulfill his duty towards the parents.   

Summary

This story is based on the middle class family of Varmaji in India. Rakesh is a devoted son of Varmaji who has got top score in medical sector. His name is published at the top of magazine. He directly goes to his father and touches his feet to get congratulation and blessing. This news spreads into his village and everybody comes to congratulate him. His father gets happy and his relatives come to thank Rakesh and his father to express their best wishes on his success. They said, "Mubarak Varmaji" your son has brought you glory.  Varmaji is proud of his devoted son because at first he come to his father and touched his feet. They bring different types of flowers, gifts and sweets. The house and garden is filled with the sound, and colors of the festival. There are garlands and halwa party and fills with clothes or gifts for Rakesh. There is not any child in this shabby little colony who shines as Rakesh.

Rakesh writes a thesis for his M.D. which helps him to take scholarship in U.S.A. medical college. Mr. Varmaji teaches his family to tell U.S.A. instead of 'America'. He believes that USA is more prestigious than 'America'. Rakesh starts his study in most prestigious college in America and starts to earn small amount. After the completion of his course he returns in his small yellow house. The place where his parents are living is not town, it is a shabby colony. At the end of the road the rubbish van tipped out their stinking contents for pigs to nose in and rag-pickers to build their shacks on, all steaming and smoking just outside the neat wire fences and well-tended gardens. Rakesh do the first thing in house to escape from the embrace of his sisters and brothers and bows down and touches his father's feet. His father works in a Kerosene dealer's depot.

Rakesh didn't married in America which his mother has feared that he might marry in America as other Indian boys do. Instead he gets ready to marry a girl from his village which his mother wishes. She is not so much attractive, plumy and uneducated girl. As she enter the house she gets able to manage all the household activities as other girls do although she is old fashioned, seemingly too lazy and placid(calm). She gave birth to a child.

Rakesh starts to work in city hospital, quickly rises to the top of administrative organization and becomes diractor of the hospital. Then, he starts his own clinic. Once he takes his parents to show new clinic in his magnificent sky-blue Ambassador car. His name and fame is increased and starts to earn much. He is known as a best and richest doctor in the town. His father has retired from his post at the kerosene dealer's depot at which he has worked for forty years. His mother was so lucky who gets a son to have a treatment, Rakesh presses his mother's feet at last movement but gets unsuccessful to save her life.

Rakesh is not only a devouted son but also a obedient son to his parent, joyful partner for his wife and friendly and sociable person to his friends. He is a man of calm nature and   good virtue, fine doctor and trained surgeon.

Because of retired life and death of his wife, Rakesh's father gets ill. Rakesh tries his best but can't find its treatment which is a kind of new disease. There is a big birthday party of the youngest son.  The celebration is suddenly hushed (stopped) when daughter in law found that the old man is in serious condition. His legs are stretched on his string bed and he has no pulse in his hand. She finds a gob of red spittle on the hem of her sari she becomes angry and leaves to care him. But his son Rakesh takes care of his father.

Rakesh provides morning tea to his father in his favourite tea brass tumbler where all family prefers to drink in china cup. He seats at the edge of his bed and reads newspaper for his father. He requests his father to come out of the room and take fresh air but father doesn't like to do this things.  On summer nights he manages him to take rest onto the lawn under the star for a whole night.

Rakesh is very serious to the diet of his father. He is gratifying his father but there is a conflict in selection of food. One day when the father is really sick and orders his daughter-in-law to prepare Soojie halwa. He eats this dish with a saucerful of cream. At the same time his son arrives. He becomes angry to his father and as a doctor he warns his father not to eat such things which doesn't suit him. he offer him to eat only little rice and milk. Sick father the sound and words of his son which are not very soft for him. He opens his eyes and looks at his son with disbelief that darkened quickly to reproach. His father says that these foods don't harm him. But Rakesh turns his back to his father and work in the shelf where medicines are kept.

The old man prefers to have roasted and fried food, sweets and Halawa but now his son is providing him dry bread, boiled lentils boiled vegetable and chicken and fish which are also boiled. The old man said his son that oily food doesn't harm him which his wife used to give him. if he ask for other food his son comes to the door and gaze at him sadly and says, " No papa we must be careful to your health, and we can't risk another illness".

Once, Varma calls his grandson and gives him fifty Paisa to buy some sweets for him. Mr. Varma says to him to go to the shop and buy fifty Paisa for jalebis (Sweets) and rest spend on his wish.  When Rakesh knows all these things, he shouted at his father and said, “Now papa, are you trying to turn my little son into a liar?” He also said to Varma, "The sweets of the bazaar were unhygienic. It causes cholera, typhoid, and gastroenteritis. I daily see these types of cases in my clinic. I don’t want to see my family on such risks?”

Old Bhatai is a neighbour who lives next to his door Varma. He watches that old Bhatai bathes in the tiled bathroom indoors and insists on carrying out his brass mug and towel in all seasons. Bhatai gets all those things that Varma expects, but he doesn’t get them from his son. One day, Varma and Bhatai are talking about their illness to each other. On the conservation, Bhatai tells Varma that he has at least a doctor (child) who takes care of his health. Varma cries after listening to it, he expresses his all pain in front of Bhatai. He says that his son not even gives him enough food to eat. His son weighs the foods, not more than two hundred grams of cereal a day. When he asks for fried, spicy, and oily food, he shouts at him with a cracked voice and never allowed to eat them. He has brought him up, given him an education which made him a great doctor but this is the way he treats him.

Rakesh didn’t give too much food to his father, only a miserable diet on which Varma found himself slipping, weakening, and soon becoming a genuinely sick man. Rakesh provides him different types of pills- pills to regulate his bowel movements, pills to bring down his blood pressure, pills to deal with his arthritis, and, eventually, pills to keep his heart beating. Pills and medicine has become a part of his diet. From time to time, Rakesh brings his father for a stomach pump and enema, which makes him frightened and helpless. Varma hated all these things but when Varma complains to it, Rakesh would simply open another bottle of pills and force him to take one.

Varma did not like to eat only medicines. He wants to die. He cries in genuine pain. The quantities of vitamins and tonics gave him a kind of strength to live like a dead man only. It is as though straining (cause to be tense) at a rope, trying to break it, and it would not break, it was still strong.

One day when Rakesh went to his father after coming from the clinic. He gave Varma a new tonic to make him feel better. But Varma denied to accept this tonic with his hand and the bottle falls on to ground, breaks into pieces and stains on the white trouser of Rakesh. Rakesh doesn't speak any word to his father. But Varma wish to die. He didn’t want to take more medicine. He stretches his body sink down in his back, closes his eyes and looks at ceiling and groans, " God is calling me _ now let me go". The old man dies.

In the story "The Piece of String" he has presented injustice to a main character and false faces of society to the justice. Hauchecorn is a main character who didn't steal a wallet but accused of stealing a purse. He tries much to prove himself as innocent but nobody believes on him. 

It was a market day in Goderville of France. All the peasants and their wife go there to make trade. The people don't look very smart their and their body is a bit bending due to plough the land for whole week. They are wearing village garment. Some of these fellows dragged a cow or a calf at het end of rope. And their wives are whipping their animals. Woman were carrying large basket from which came forth the heads of chicken or ducks. Some wagon was passing by the road some are riding on them.

There is crowd in the town a mingle multitude of men and beasts. The horn of cattle, the high, long-napped hats of wealthy peasants, the headdresses of women come to the surface of that sea. And the sharp, shill, barking voices made a continuous, wild din, while above if occasionally raised a huge burst of laughter from the sturdy lungs of a merry peasant or a prolonged bellow from a cow tied fast to the wall of a house. There was the smell of the stable, of milk, of hay and of perspiration, giving off that half-human, half-animal odor that is peculiar to county folk.

 

Maitre Hauchecorn of Breaute had just arrived at Goderville, and he was directing his steps toward the public square when he perceived up on the ground a little piece of string. He thinks that everything is useful for him and bent to pick up a little piece of string from the street. When he sees his enemy M. Malandain is observing him, he is ashamed to be picking up a piece of string from the dirt, so he pretends he is looking for something else. From the start, therefore, Hauchecorn characterized as crafty and deceitful, misleading others about his intentions.

 

He was soon lost in the noisy and slowly moving crowd, which was busy with interminable bargaining. The women had taken out the chicken for selling and some people are having some dishes in Jourdain's. There were vehicles of all kinds, carts, gigs, wagons, dumpcarts are standing at the shop. They are busy in buying the goods in low price and the shopkeepers are busy in convincing the customers for getting high price. Some people are coming and some people are returning to their homes. They can buy the goods, foods, and animals in the market day. They are very careful to the venders who could cheat or steal the things. 

Suddenly the drum beat in the court before the house. Everybody pay attention to its jerky voice. It was told that there was lost this morning on the road to Benzeville, between nine and ten o'clock, a black leather pocketbook containing five hundred francs and some business paper. The people are requested to return to the mayor's office or to MaitreFortneHoulbreque of Manneville, there will be twenty francs reward. After sometime one officer comes and calls Hauchecorn to visit the mayor to his office. He frightens to the mayor and follows the officer. The mayor accuses him something picking up on the road Benzeville. Hauchecorn denied that he only picked up a little piece of string. But the mayor insisted that Monsieur Malandain has seen him picking a wallet and searching on the ground if there was other money. ButHauchecorn denied and repeated the same thing that he was taken only string. He requested them to search wallet in his body. They searched but didn't find anything on him.

The news had spread that an old man stole a wallet. The old man started to tell about his event when he picked up a string not a wallet to everybody. But nobody believes on him rather they laugh at his logic. The night came but he started to visit people and tell the story that he was innocent.

Next day about one pm, the lost wallet was found with 500 francs. The man couldn't read and gave that wallet to his employer instead of giving to MaitreFortneHoulbreque . Hauchecorn knows the news and gets happy and started to tell his story. Next week he goes to the market and a horse dealer man called him and told that it was a trick of old man, a story of string. Moreover he explained that there is one that finds and there is one that reports. At any rate he is mixed with it. He understood that they are still accusing him of stealing that purse. He tries to protest it but all the table began to laugh.

The more people accuse him, the more Hauchecorn insists he is innocent, becoming more and more elaborate and obsessed with his defense, which, ironically, leads him to be more and more disbelieved. His past comes back to haunt him, he becomes more and more but  peasant ridicule, and eventually some months later he gets sick and dies saying a piece of string, a little piece of string.

In fact Hauchecorne is not a bad man. But he tries to be a good man of the society. He tries to prove hat he has not picked up a piece of string on the way. It was nonsense thing for them that he was picking a string a useless thing. The string was useful thing for him. He tries hundred time to prove him as innocent person but never be believed. He was obsessed person and tries to prove that he is the innocent person. But society doesn't believe him and he gets sick due to that ridicule event of his life and finally dies due to this piece of string. It was not necessary him to prove that he has not taken that purse, in one point people may realize that he has not taken the purse.  He is afraid of the social stigma that people wouldn't accuse him of that he find a purse on the way and doesn't return. So he started to tell all the people about his story of string. When people tell this story people started to laugh at him.

Mrs. Baroda is not much happy to know that her husband's friend Gouvernail is coming to spend a week or two on the plantation. She has heard about him many times but never seen before. He was her husband's college friend and working as journalist, he is the man of town than a village. She has made an image in her mind about her husband's friend as tall, slim, cynical, with eyeglasses, and his hands in his pockets; she doesn’t like him. When he arrives she finds nothing matching with the reality and her imagination. He is not much tall, cynical and not wearing eyeglasses. She rather likes him when he is presented himself. There no reason to her why she has liked her. She doesn't find any promising traits as her husband have. On the contrary he remains mute and receptive before her chatty eagerness to make him at home and in face of Gaston's frank and wordy hospitality. Her husband was like courteous towards her but his friend doesn't make direct appeal to her approval or even esteem.

Once they are planting when Gouvernail smokes his cigar lazily and listens attentively to Gaston's experience as a sugar planter. He doesn’t care to fish and displayed no eagerness to go out and kill groscvecs when Gaston proposed doing so.

Gouvernail's personality puzzles her. There are many dissimilarity between her husband and his friend but she likes him. Indeed, he was a lovable, inoffensive fellow. That a night she is sitting alone on a bench. She had never known her thoughts or her intentions to be so confused. He has the feeling of a distinct necessity to quit her home in the morning. In the darkness there appears a man with a cigarette in his hand. He sat beside her and gave white scarf which her husband had told him to bring for her. She doesn't have any interest to that cloth. The man wishes to talk to her 3and starts about night that is fresh and cold but she doesn't respond to him.

Gouvernail was not a self conscious man to the feelings of woman but this night his mood is different. He talks to her freely and intimately in a low, hesitating drawl that is not unpleasant to hear. He is talking about his college days with Gaston. She is vaguely getting what he was saying. She is not thinking in his words drinking in the tone of his voice. She wants to reach out her hand in the darkness and touch him with sensitive tips of her fingers upon the face or the lips. She wants to draw close to him and whisper against his cheek. The stronger impulsive grows to bring herself near him but she goes away from him because she thinks herself as a respectable woman.

Mrs. Baroda is greatly tempted that night to tell her husband but she keeps that secret. She says that there are some battles in life which a human being must fight alone.

When Gaston rise in the morning she has already gone to the town and doesn't return until Gouvernail lives that house. Gaston talks to bring him back in coming summer but his wife strongly doesn't allow him to bring back. But before a year ended she proposed her husband to go to visit Gouvernail.
